Promise, Witness, Remembrance, now in exhibition at the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, serves as a space to honor the life of Breonna Taylor, who was killed by police officers in her home nearby on March 13, 2020. The centerpiece of the exhibition is Amy Sherald's portrait of Taylor, which is arranged to be visible throughout the space. The show is organized into three sections which are intended to instigate reflection on three main concepts: the promise of a nation, and the rights of its citizens; the ways artists bear witness to the contemporary moment, particularly in the wake of recent protests; and, the practice of remembrance, specifically for those who have been lost to gun violence and police brutality. The exhibition was conceptualized following conversations with Taylor's mother, Tamika Palmer, as well as with national and local advisory panels.
